Tonight was an exciting “spur of the moment” idea to cook a pizza on the MAK 2 Star Pellet grill. I had already purchased the ingredients and was waiting for the right time and craving for pizza, so we gave it a try. Since it was Monday Night Football 2020 kick-off and a double header at that, we decided this was a perfect fit. The pizza cook was simple and the combinations you can dream up are endless.
- Thin crust pizza
- Meatball sauce, pepperoni, shaved Parmesan, ground beef, provolone
- MAK 2 Star pellet grill set to “Grill” mode… 550-585F
- Lumber Jack Supreme Blend wood pellets
- Pizza and pizza stone put on grill at same time on bottom grate
- 8.5 minutes
- Remove pizza from pizza stone so it doesn’t continue to cook and let cool
- Final Result: Thin, crispy pizza with awesome flavor
First Pizza with Pepperoni and Shaved Parmesan
I began with a Mama Mary’s 2-pack of thin pizza crust. For the first pizza, I put together the crust layered with a very light layer of extra virgin olive oil then I used a sweet marinara meatball sauce from my local grocer. Apply a thin layer of sauce making sure you cover the entire pizza crust. My first pizza was a traditional pepperoni pizza, so I then layered it with the pepperoni and thick, shaved parmesan cheese. Another layer of sauce was applied to blend it all together. The spices were garlic powder, onion salt and red pepper flakes. The end product was amazing.
The pizza was put on a pizza stone and cooked on the bottom grate for 10 minutes. We set the MAK 2 Star pellet grill to “Grill” mode so the pit was running around 550-585F. We were using Lumber Jack Supreme Blend wood pellets as our fuel source and the smell of the smoke coming off the grill was great. This was a very hot pit and the pizza came out sizzling and crisp. A gentle hint of smoke flavor permeated into this pizza and it was similar to a wood-fired pizza oven. I had been wanting to do this project for a long time to test the MAK 2 Star pellet grill to see what kind of results we could get from making pizza. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised and truly convinced this is the best pit for all-around cooking.
Second Pizza with Pepperoni, Ground Beef and Provolone
Our second pizza was dressed and layered close to the same as the first pizza, however, I added cooked ground meat as a topping to mix with the pepperoni. Again, I put the shaved parmesan cheese but I blended it with some real provolone cheese. The spices used were a bit different. I continued to use the garlic but instead of a red pepper spicier tang I used the SuckleBuster’s 1836 Beef Seasoning. Once again, the result was even better than the first pizza.
While we thought the first pizza was amazing, we couldn’t keep our hands off the second pizza. The flavors that came through with the ground beef, provolone cheese, and 1836 Beef Seasoning was awesome. We were not expecting pizza to taste this good at home, and we were blown away by the results. We could not be happier with our MAK 2 Star pellet grill due to its versatility and ease of use. Firing up the grill was done with a push of a button, and we were cooking in 20-25 minutes and the pizza was done in 35 minutes. You couldn’t ask for a better experience.
Perfectly Cooked Crispy Thin Crust Pizza
The pizza crust turned out great. The color was golden dark brown with black marks and small burnt edges to give the pizza that wonderful oven fire flavor. We had originally cooked our first pizza for 10 minutes but decided that time needed to be shortened. We cooked our second pizza for 8.5 minutes, and we ended up with an awesome, sizzling pizza with smoky flavor and crispy flavorful crust. Make sure to remove the pizza from the pizza stone after the cook is over so the pizza doesn’t continue to cook. The stone will stay hot for a while.
We couldn’t stop eating this fabulous blend of ingredients coupled with an incredible smoky flavor and crispy thin crust pizza. Even walking outside to check on the pizza you could smell the irresistible aroma of the pizza ingredients in the smokey air. I’d highly recommend this project to anyone who plans on purchasing or already owns a MAK 2 Star pellet grill… or any pellet grill for that matter. Getting outside and cooking pizza is fun for the whole family. Teaching a kid how to cook is even more fun and rewarding. What a great night of football and pizza! It’s easy and a quick way to make an over-the-top meal.
