Pecan pie smoked on pellet grill

It should come as no surprise that everyone loves dessert. After a long day in the sun drinking your favorite refreshment and eating your favorite BBQ, you sit down to enjoy your favorite dessert. Today, we are going to introduce you to one of the best pecan pie recipes you will ever eat. This recipe comes from a time when people left their front doors unlocked, from a time when children would play outside all day long, from a time when the news only came on in the evenings… you get my point.

We took it one step further and baked the pecan pie on our MAK 2 Star pellet grill to give it that perfect touch of smoke flavor. Before you think how awful this might sound or how you don’t want your dessert to taste like your brisket, remember the smoke flavor doesn’t have to overcome the sweet flavors of the pie. The maple syrup and the pecan captures the masculine side of this dessert not to mention a crisp crust with the slight hint of the smoke is a fantastic compliment. There’s plenty of decadent sweet flavor to be savored.

The choice of pellets will determine how much smoke will transfer to your pie. I have made the pie with several types of flavored pellets. The best pellet to get a heavier smoke flavor is a premium blend wood pellet made with hard woods. I have also used Apple, but the smoke didn’t render out as much.

Mertie’s 1968 Pecan Pie Recipe

This recipe comes from four generations of back-home style, good ol’ fashioned desserts. The year of the original recipe card shows “Mertie – 1968”. The recipe is super simple to make with ingredients that can be easily found at the local grocery store. It can capture the attention of the kids too and a great idea to include them in on the project.

Take my advice, grab the ingredients and put yourself in the 1968 kitchen. Once ready for the oven, fire up the MAK 2 Star grill and turn this into a collaboration of amazing smoky sweetness. A dollop or two of homemade vanilla ice cream on top and served while the pie is still warm wouldn’t hurt a soul either. Simple ingredients, simple times and a simple bake.

If you are looking for something a little different with your pecan pie, try using a chocolate crust. We first tried this not knowing how it would turn out but I must say, it has become one of our favorites. The chocolate crust adds that cocoa flare which is combined with the smokey sweetness to deliver a pie that will blow your socks off.

Conclusion

The MAK 2 Star General pellet grill has become our go to cooker for making all of our pecan pies. The ease of starting the grill and the perfect hint of smoke layer on the pies delivers a world class pecan pie that will keep your guests coming back for more. The best advice I can give you is to cook one extra pecan pie. Because your gonna need it! 😉
